Most Common Dental Procedures

What are the most common dental procedures? Here we will mention and briefly explain the most common ones performed by dentists in Algodones, Mexico.

Either if it is out of curiosity to know what your teeth may need in the future, or you wish to know what is in store for you on your next trip

to the dentist, we will provide you with a very general idea of what each process is about in here.

Fillings and Repairs

Fillings and repair are one of the most common procedures in all dental clinics. It targets teeth compromised by tooth decay or fracture. As for the procedure itself, the dentist will first restore the affected area of the tooth by taking care of the cavities, then they will proceed to clean said area to prepare it for the filling, and lastly apply the filling, usually made from a mixture of plastic and glass. This is done by layers where the dentist uses a special light to make the material harden.

The filling will, of course, replicate the resistance and consistency of a regular tooth. It is simple and very effective.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic, seeks to save the natural look and functionality of the teeth, while also relieving pain coming from cavities, cracks, fractures, gum disease, and many more. The procedure involves extracting the affected pulp with the use of a drill, then proceed to clean and shape the root canal. Next, the pulp chamber and root canal get their filling with thermoplastic material. And finally, the dentist shapes it into the form of a real tooth.

Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns treatment, also called caps, is used when there is no hope for further restoration for the damaged tooth.  It is essentially a tooth-shaped cover that goes over the damaged or decayed tooth.

These procedures begin with the dentist carving the piece that will be hosting the crown, and then prepare the tooth by removing any stains or fixing fissures. In case of a really damaged root, a root canal will be necessary to avoid any complications in the future. Once that is done, the dentist will make an impression of the filled tooth and nearby teeth to make the crown fit exactly as it needs to inside your mouth, these need to be perfectly made to avoid any discomfort!

Bridges and Implants

Bridges, which are also called fixed removable denture, are used to replace one or more missing teeth. To put it simply, the natural teeth at each side will suspend the artificial tooth or teeth. It is one of the least invasive procedures as it does not require any surgery. The process is fairly simple: pillars are prepared in the form of crowns, one at each side, which will then support the structure for the artificial teeth. It then goes into place in such a way that you will not notice much of a difference.

Now for implants, it is a bit more of a process. First your dentist has to make sure you are eligible by performing several tests. And it consists on extracting the damaged root and replacing it with an implant. These implants are usually made of titanium and are affixed to your jaw bone.  Then the crown fits to give the patient a nice artificial tooth that feels and looks like the real thing.

Extractions

Extractions are generally needed when teeth indeed need to be removed from their socket in the bone, either if it due damage, fracture, severe decay, or for orthodontic treatment. Usually your dentist will try fixing the tooth before considering to remove it.

Teeth Whitening

Probably the most popular and demanded procedure! As it is easy to perform with immediate results. Dentists usually use hydrogen peroxide, which bleaches the teeth as well as cleans the tooth enamel.
