Tooth Enamel: Everything You Need To Know

I am sure you have heard the word tooth enamel before, either it is about taking care of it or about substances that can potentially harm it. For those of you who are starting to read about the subject, then you are in the right place! We will tell you all about it here, from what is it to why it is important and how to prevent it.

What is tooth enamel?

As we bite and chew food with our teeth, it is done with the hard outer layer of our teeth, the tooth enamel. This material that our teeth is made of is actually the hardest in our bodies, and it covers the teeth’s dentin which is much more fragile. Think of tooth enamel as a hard carapace that shields the soft and vulnerable nerves of our teeth. Tooth enamel itself is a dense white crystallization that protects the inside from bacteria, simple stuff! The enamel can range in color from white, yellow and even grayish and bluish.

Why is it important?

As we mentioned before, the tooth enamel is a hard crystallization, mainly made of hydroxyapatite. And this material can suffer from erosion, also known by the name of enamel loss.

When the teeth suffers from enamel loss, it is easily for them to be vulnerable to a lot of things. The main problems that come with it are tooth sensitivity, stain of the teeth, uneven edges, tooth decay and potentially cause your teeth to become almost transparent as the enamel grows thinner. This leads to your teeth to break and chip more easily. But not only that, it also protects your teeth from temperature and chemicals.

As such it is important to take care of it. After all, the body cannot regenerate it, as it is devoid of living cells unlike bones and tissue.

How to prevent enamel erosion

Enamel erosion happens usually with almost everything we consume nowadays. This ranges from soft drinks, to fruit drinks, foods high in sugar and starches, and even medications. But not only that, even stress and grinding our teeth is harmful to our enamel in the long run.

As such, here are some things to keep in mind:

In Dental del Río Los Algodones, we recommend brushing twice a day as well as to make use of flossing every day. It will help your teeth a long, long way. Also using mouthwash especially to combat enamel loss is a wise choice, indeed. Keep in mind that brushing too hard, or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can wear down your tooth enamel.

Avoid consuming a lot of highly acidic foods and drink. This includes sodas and citrus fruits and juices. And remember to rinse your mouth with water! This will help greatly in cleaning it from the remains of acid.

Keep a watchful eye on the starchy and sugary foods you consume throughout the day. This is aimed at plaque bacteria as it eats the food remnants and converts it into acid. Keep your mouth clean to avoid tooth decay!

A common way to also keep a healthy mouth is to chew sugarless gum with xylitol. Not only does it help clean your mouth from acid, it also boost your saliva production!

Make sure your toothpaste as well as mouthwash have fluoride in them. Fluoride is like spinach to Popeye. It strengthens the tooth enamel! Pharmacies in Los Algodones have a great variety as well as good prices for them.

Remember that your dentist is also very knowledgeable about the subject, and will be able to suggest as well as help to overcome this problen and many more based on your need!
